Weaver High School is one of the largest schools in Hartford’s district. Located in the North End section of Hartford, this 40-year-old building underwent an extreme makeover. The original 370,000 sf school was built in 1974 and designed for 2,000 students. Since enrollment has taken a drastic drop in recent years, the building was reduced in size by 100,000 sf during the complete Renovate As New of the existing school. This project also includes the renovation of the 90,000 sf Fieldhouse.
The Doc Hurley Fieldhouse building serves as a community resource for local sports teams as well as High School athletes. The building includes a gymnasium, indoor track, locker rooms, weight rooms, and a natatorium. Player and Coach viewing rooms serve as a window into athletic areas. Locker rooms include showers and equipment storage. Synthetic Turf Athletic Fields for baseball, football, and soccer flank the building.
The new school now provides consolidated space for three of the City’s magnet schools including Journalism and Media Academy, Kinsella Magnet High School, and High School Inc., which focuses on business and finance. It also includes a Community Health Center.
The energy efficient building has two electrical services, feeders, and transformers to accommodate the building load. Weaver also features the largest air-cooled chillers that the manufacturer, Trane, makes – totaling 550 tons.
