CES provided MEP/FP engineering design services to the University of Hartford for the expansion and renovation of the Gengras Student Union. A top priority for this project was upgrading the building’s 1960 vintage mechanical systems, incorporating efficient lighting and upgrading the dated technology infrastructure. Solid walls were broken down to allow more natural light into interior areas and physical spaces were reorganized to create a more open-concept, modern floorplan conducive to multi-functional uses.
The new Student Union is an inviting and vibrant community space for students, faculty, and staff. The renovation provides a new multi-purpose event space, improves the outdoor patio, reorganizes student “hang-out” and club areas, and updates the student lounge. The University hopes the dramatic change in atmosphere will inspire collaborative work and encourage students to participate more in organizations and activities. For minimal disruption in daily operations, the project was completed in three phases while school and summer activities were in session.
