CES provided MEP engineering services for the renovation of approximately 8,000 sf within UConn’s Roy E. Jones Annex to create laboratory space for the University’s Plant and Soil Health Center. The facility includes both flexible and dedicated laboratory environments designed to support the testing and handling of plant materials and soil samples.
A key design consideration was maintaining appropriate pressure relationships between laboratory areas to limit the migration of dust generated by dried soil and plant materials. Systems include dedicated outdoor air, energy recovery, laboratory exhaust, and reverse osmosis/deionized (RODI) water. A plate energy recovery unit reduces loads on the air-handling equipment associated with the laboratories’ significant direct exhaust requirements.
Working within the existing building presented tight ceiling conditions and limited floor-to-roof-deck heights. CES coordinated supply, return, and exhaust ductwork at the roof level to preserve valuable ceiling plenum space. The project also required substantial modifications to the existing electrical switchgear to serve the renovated laboratories while remaining mindful of the project budget.
