Smalley Academy assists its community in a number of ways – as a learning environment for grades K – 4 and community adult education; and also as a community based health center. The original 90,000 sf building was completely renovated with all new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and technology systems. New rooftop HVAC units were installed as well as high-efficiency boilers, new electric service and distribution, LED lighting and plumbing fixtures. The scope included 16,000 square feet of additional classroom and media center space.

The project faced challenges after the original architect was terminated by the City. Kaestle Boos Associates and CES picked up the project after schematic design was completed by another design team. After thoroughly reviewing the schematic design package, it was discovered that the proposed classroom addition was over the property line – the building needed to be reconfigured to fit the site. Working as a team, bid packages were modified and the project remained on schedule and on budget.
