This project involved a complete gut renovation of a high-end duplex apartment located within the Upper East Side Historic District of New York City, transforming the residence into a modern single-family home while respecting the constraints of its historic context. CES provided comprehensive MEP engineering design services, tailored to support the performance expectations of a luxury apartment connected to the building’s existing chilled water system.
A key design challenge was the integration of a dedicated humidification system without the use of traditional ceiling ductwork—an essential goal to preserve architectural ceiling heights and finished interiors. Through close coordination with the design team, CES developed an innovative solution that leveraged wall cavities and fixed millwork elements to discreetly route new ductwork. This approach allowed for full humidification coverage throughout the apartment without compromising aesthetics, ceiling conditions, or historic limitations, resulting in a blend of comfort, performance, and design integrity.
