CES provided MEP/FP engineering and technology design services for the renovation of a 4,000-square-foot space into a new compounding pharmacy for Middlesex Hospital, designed to meet United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards for clean room environments and hazardous drug handling.
A USP compounding pharmacy is a highly regulated facility where medications are prepared to meet specific patient needs. These pharmacies must comply with rigorous safety, sterility, and environmental control standards—particularly USP Chapter 800, which outlines requirements for the safe handling of hazardous drugs to protect both patients and healthcare workers.
The new pharmacy suite includes sterile compounding and support spaces engineered to meet these critical standards. CES designed a dedicated air handling unit for the pharmacy, along with a custom chiller, HEPA filtration, air valves, exhaust fans, and laminar flow panels to maintain contamination-free conditions and precise environmental control.
One of the project’s challenges was an existing mezzanine directly above the renovation area. CES leveraged this constraint as an opportunity, strategically locating equipment within the mezzanine and ensuring maintenance access. Careful coordination and extensive field verification ensured that all systems fit within the tight footprint, resulting in a reliable, maintainable installation and a satisfied client.
