CES provided full MEP/FP engineering design and LEED – compliant energy modelling services for “The Grand Expansion”, a ground-breaking, certified LEED Silver, sustainable design renovation and addition project at this 75 year old hotel.
Many elements of The Grand Expansion were recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council including the use of recycled materials in the overall construction, the employment of geothermal heating and cooling methods as well as the implementation of eco paving and rain gardens, allowing rainwater to be re-used. Working with the current Hershey Nursery, the resort also established an organic farm whose products are included on the menu at the restaurant.
A 165 ton closed loop geothermal system serves ten new 4,500 sf cottages, a new 19,000 sf restaurant/ meeting center, pool pavilions, and many other outbuildings including the new Cocoa Kid’s Club and sports pavilion. This closed loop ground coupled heat exchange is used for water to air heating and cooling, thereby permanently reducing the demand on both oil and electricity.
Other energy-efficient systems include a natural gas fired high-efficiency water heater with energy recovery ventilators, central occupancy temperature controls and full cutoff site lighting. The restaurant utilizes water cooled refrigeration for the freezers, walk in coolers, ice makers and keg room allowing it to forego the use of ozone depleting refrigerants.
