Having served the Groton Public School system for more than ten years – CES has embarked on a new consolidated middle school for the district. The new middle school will be located adjacent to the existing Fitch High School. The mechanical system design upholds the community’s sustainability goals and includes: chilled beams, air cooled chillers with ice storage, LED lighting, vehicle charging stations and generators supporting life safety and building freeze protection.

A significant energy savings will be seen with the incorporation of air cooled chillers with ice storage. This unique system builds ice at night, while electricity rates are low. During the day, the system burns the ice and cools down the water that is going into the building for air conditioning and dehumidification purposes. Engineers worked closely with the design team to incorporate systems and electrical demands to support a black box theater in the facility. Saw tooth sky lights in the cafeteria feature selectively exposed mechanical equipment to compliment this design feature.
