CES is providing MEP/FP engineering design services for this 30,400 sf renovation at the Cambridge Fire Headquarters. The first step of this project was designing a temporary offsite fire station for use during construction in October 2020. After personnel were relocated, work began on the renovation at the historically significant headquarters, built in 1933. All existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in the building will be removed and replaced. New systems include LED lighting throughout, geothermal, and dedicated outdoor air units. Water to water heat pumps with dedicated outdoor air systems include energy recovery wheels.

The project aims for LEED Certification and Net Zero emissions. The City’s Net Zero Emissions requirement will be achieved through energy consumption reduction measures, a migration from gas to electric heating, reduced air infiltration, increased thermal insulation, fenestration and envelope upgrades, as well as onsite and offsite renewable energy. 13 geothermal wells are planned on this extremely compact site.
