CES is providing full MEP/FP engineering design services for a new 350-bed all-electric residence hall at Binghamton University, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The project is a major addition to the campus housing portfolio and is being delivered through a Design-Build process.
Sited along the northern edge of campus, the seven-story building is shaped to work with the natural grade, preserve surrounding wooded areas, and create a clear, welcoming arrival for students. Inside, the hall will offer three- and four-bedroom suites, single-bed units, ADA-accessible suites, and a Resident Director apartment, supported by efficient systems designed for comfort and long-term campus growth.
The fully electrified HVAC design includes ducted high-efficiency heat pumps serving dormitory spaces, roof-mounted DOAS units with electric reheat for ventilation, and VRF systems for common areas. A central electric hot water plant with electric boilers supports domestic hot water, while electrical systems feature high-efficiency LED lighting and controls; a natural-gas generator provides backup for emergency lighting, the hot water plant, rooftop DOAS, security, IT, and fire alarm systems.
Early familiarity with the campus distribution network—particularly medium-voltage coordination—and experience with early procurement processes helped streamline design decisions and was welcomed by the client.
