The new Beman Middle School was completed in three phases. The first phase of the project included demolition of the existing auditorium and administrative offices with the addition of a temporary bus loop and parent drop off area. Phase two was the construction of a new 150,000 sf school, while phase three included fitting out and furnishing the new school along with the demolition of the old school.
In an effort to greatly reduce the building’s energy consumption, CES incorporated chilled beams, condensing boilers, variable speed, and energy recovery ventilation systems, high performance lighting and controls, and a DDC system into our design. Extensive daylight harvesting was used to maximize sunlight introduction through glazing in order to reduce the lighting power output. Other sustainable components include a rooftop solar array and the potential for a grounded PV array. With these sustainable techniques in place, this school has the potential of reaching a Net Zero energy status.
